Get your F.R.E.Q. on

by richard

A new product announcement always gives us a bit of a charge here at Mad Catz.  It's great to see something you've been working on for so long actually unveiled to those who are going to benefit the most from our work - you, our loyal customers.  The F.R.E.Q. is the second part of that holy triumvirate of PC gaming (otherwise known as the mouse, headset and keyboard) that many of you have been expecting from us for a while now and, well, we think it's a little bit special.

The first thing you're going to notice is the design - we think you'll agree it fits in totally with the R.A.T. and yes, those pivot hinges are made from metal, continuing the theme we started with that award-winning product: this is built to look amazing, but also to last.

Most importantly though, it sounds stunning.  50mm drivers (most PC gaming headsets up to now have settled for 40mm) provide an incredibly detailed audio performance that really will have you noticing things in your games, music and movies that you might not have noticed before.  Play Battlefield 3 with the F.R.E.Q. and you'll never need wonder why DICE keep winning awards for their audio - you really can tell the subtle differences in the sounds that your feet make when running over each ground surface in the game; something that might have eluded you previously on other gaming audio products.

The microphone performance won't let you down either.  We've been testing the F.R.E.Q. for quite a while now; it's that great situation where you get to take your work home with you and give it a proper "field test" and everytime we go online we get people asking which microphone we're using because they're so impressed with the clarity of it.  We've even made it compatible with your MP3 player or smartphone - you can also take phone calls using the microphone if you've got an iPhone, HTC or Blackberry handset (for other handsets you may need a 3.5mm TRRS adapter due to the different pin-outs used on the headphone jack).

You can get more details (and pictures) at this page on our site.

I am wondering if You will ever make wireless headset, because i would already be buying this one if it wasn't for the wire.

If you look at the numbering system of the R.A.T. then you can see that we've left that as a possibility (R.A.T.9 was the wireless version of the mice).  However, we've got nothing to announce at this time, we're afraid.

Please tell me you also have a non-USB version in the works. I love everything about the headset except the fact that you went USB instead of straight connectors. I have an awesome sound card and it would be a shame to waste it. I love my R.A.T. 7 mouse and I'm waiting anxiously for the M.M.O. 7 to be release, would love to match that with the F.R.E.Q.

You've got both USB and 3.5mm cables in the box.  However, the single 3.5mm jack is a TRRS style connector which is what enables the microphone capability when used with smartphones - to use both the headphones and the mic with your PC soundcard you would need an adapter like this:

I believe this one will be more interesting for me and I am eager to try taking phone calls using microphones connected to my Iphone. This will give me a new test of technology.

I´m currentlly using the wireless rat 9 and I must say it looks awsome... it´s allmost so goodlooking so it makes it worthwhile even though I can´t DL the customizating software, it frequentlly stops broadcasting and has a battery life of a day.. but I do love it.

FREQ5 headphones are still only preorder in the USA. It might be to early to ask launch dates in Europe and Spain? Smile

Hey madcatz.  I just purchased the MMO7, its GREAT!!

Anytway,  I am saving for the Freq 5 and cant wait for it to come out to replace my razer megalodon headset that hasnt worked right since out of the box a year and a half ago.

You guys also replaced a razer mouse that died within a year.  I am hoping that the mmo7 lasts longer then that.

Anyway, Here is the thing.  My Logitech G11 keyboard is 5 years old.  It has 18 macro buttoms on the left side.  I am really used to playing with this macro button layout.

However, since I am making the full switch to your brand, could you guys get a new keyboard on the market?  The V7 while nice, the macro buttons on either side of the keyboard is not viable.  My right hand needs to stay on my mmo7 at all times.  I wold like a keyboard that has all the macro buttons on the left side of it and I am writing this to give you maybe an idea.

Also for my last idea, I own a mousepad that actualyl glows blue but again, it isnt your brand.  Its acrylic glass and glows blue.  It has a wheel to turn up or down the light.

If you make a comparable keyboard to my aging G11 (5 years old now) and a glowing blue mousepad, everything on my desk will be exclusively your brand and that would be a GREAT picture to take and send to you Smile. I know I am just a fan but we as customers will never get 100% what we desire if we never give ideas on what we want in the first place Smile.

Hi James,

Thanks for the feedback we do listen to what you guys are saying so who knows, maybe some of what you suggested is stuff we're already working on?  Or maybe not - obviously I can't comment on anything which we haven't announced yet!

We've been addressing some feedback from beta testing but it shouldn't be much longer now - we will let you know as soon as a firm release date has been announced!

When will this be released? I'm really doubting if I should wait for this headset or buy another one now, but if it's going to be another two months until release I think I'll look for something else. If it releases shortly I can't wait to complete my Cyborg gaming set with this headset.

Could you please give me at least an estimation of how much longer it's going to be? 2 weeks? 6 months?

Ahcas Netherlands | Reply

I'm afraid I can't be more specific but I can definitely say it will be much less than 6 months!
